The plan uses nature’s five elements for the development of a sustainable university – All buildings will be built with rammed Earth with trombe walls for insulation and roofs serving as greenhouses.
The arrangement is interspersed by vegetable gardens irrigated by the stream and the ice stupas. No fossil fuel is used for any energy requirements and all modes of transport run on solar-powered engines.
All buildings shall be oriented south, 10-15 degrees variation, to maximize exposure to the Sun and encourage passive heating of the buildings. Even at sub-zero temperature of -20 degree Celsius the room temperature remains +15 degree Celsius. The intelligent design makes the campus one of the few zero-energy campus archetype in the country.
The university is 100% pedestrianized with all on-campus buildings universally accessible from neighbouring villages and city plan. Public transport and logistics hub are planned at the periphery of the city limits to manage heavy traffic through the township and the village.
The ground and roofs give the university a beautiful green appearance overall, while the traditional motifs and elements on the buildings and passages showcase the rich culture of Ladakh lending the campus a distinct identity. Eventually the architecture diminishes and the experience remains.
