The project has the blessings of His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpochey as the Chief Patron, participation of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and the leadership of Ladakh cutting across religious and party lines.

Himalayan Institute of Alternatives will be a non-sectarian international institute with a local governing board representing all sections of society. It will also have an advisory committee comprising reputed national and global leaders in different fields. The university will establish strategic affiliations with different national and international institutes of excellence to acquire capacities in relevant fields and to collaborate.

SECMOL, with over 27 years of experience in running a similar practically engaging alternative school, will be the co-founder and the university will tailor-make courses that are meaningful to life in the high mountains and the world in general, ranging from passive solar heating and energy solutions to climate change adaptation to the liberal arts.

Sonam Wangchuk

Sonam Wangchuk is a Ladakhi engineer, innovator and education reformist. He is the founding-director of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) which was founded in 1988 by a group of students who had been in his own words, the ‘victims’ of an alien education system foisted on Ladakh. He is also known for designing the SECMOL campus that runs on solar energy and uses no fossil fuels for cooking, lighting or heating.

Wangchuk was instrumental in the launch of Operation New Hope in 1994, a collaboration of government, village communities and the civil society to bring reforms in the government school system. He invented the Ice Stupa technique that creates artificial glaciers, used for storing winter water in form of conical shaped ice heap.

Ms. Gitanjali JB

She recently gave up her vibrant corporate career to help us expedite the setting up of the HIAL Alternative University in Ladakh. Gitanjali is a multi-talented dynamic woman. She is a management graduate from the Xavier's Institute Bhubaneshwor and has since been in key corporate positions nationally and internationally in companies like SRF, Deloitte etc.

As a serial entrepreneur she has helped launch her own family companies like Pushan, Shanghai Power Plant Ltd, Helios Publicaitons and Aum Hospital, As an educator she headed a well known Cambridge School in Chennai, Apart from that she is a Karate Black Belt and won the Karate World championship in USA, together with her son Aryan.

She has been performing Odissi Dance and Russian Ballet on stage, sings Hindustani classical and plays the piano. Also practices and teaches yoga and meditation

Mr. Dilip Jain

Mr. Dilip Jain did his MBA from SP Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) and is closely working with us since he took sabbatical from his own company where he served as the CEO.

Dilip is also a Chartered Accountant and has worked in corporate sector for 7 years with companies like ABN AMRO, Marico and Voltas Ltd (@Tata Group) in senior management roles handling corporate strategy & planning, finance & procurement, mergers, acquisitions & divestment. Thereafter he was instrumental in growing his family business, Gujarat InfraPipes Pvt. Ltd from less than 20 crores to more than 100 crores in just 5 years. As an entrepreneur, he co-founded and served as CEO of Ratnaakar Estate - Por Industrial Park and developed 150 acres of projects in JV with a PE fund.

With adventure sports as his hobby, he created a platform called ME TOO Kids Adventure Club to provide real experiential learning while having fun in the lap of nature. He has deep interest in philosophy and is a active member of New Acropolis India.
